Topology Design Method for Super Grids based on experiences in China and North America

2020
Super Grids have been studied and proposed in many countries to increase technical performance of high voltage transmission systems. Such systems must be efficient, reliable, and resilient against weather events or intentional disruptive actions in order to support economic development, foster renewable generation, promote social well-being and safeguard national security interests. This paper compares Super Grid proposals for China and the US. Super Grid in China is proposed in two alternatives: ultra-high voltage alternating current (UHVAC) or a combination of extra-high voltage alternating current (EHVAC) with line commutated converters high voltage direct current (LCC-HVDC). Super Grid in the US is proposed as a mix of voltage-source converters VSC-HVDC and 765 kV EHVAC. This paper analyses the specifics of each architecture and proposes a Super Grids topology design method useful for the proposition of new topologies in other parts of the globe.
