2006
Metabolic syndrome is diagnosed according to the criteria issued by ATP III (National Cholesterol Education program Adult Treatment Panel lll). The main objective of this research was to investigate the metabolic syndrome prevalence in postmenopausal women and its reiationship to hormonal therapy and cigarette use. In this prospective analysis 105 patients were studied. These patients attended two gynecological clinical centers (Health Services Provider=IPS) in Bogota. Age range was from 45 to 64 years, with one year of amenorrhea. Risk factors, such as blood pressure, BMI and lipid profile were evaluated. The data were processed in Epi-info. The studied group had a mean age of 58 years with a menopausal age of 50. 14.58% of the women had hormonal replacement therapy, 7.6% were smokers, 25.71 % were on antihypertensive therapy and 3.7% were using hypoglycemiant medication. Women who fulfilled the metabolic syndrome criteria showed: hypertension 31,43%, abdominal perimeter higher than 88cm a 61.39%, overweight 36.19% and obesity 23.81% respectively. 7.73% of the patient were hiperglycemic; they also showed a total cholesterol 48.04mg/dl, 43.30% with HDL 50 mg/dl, LDL < 130mg/dl 44,68% and 48,54% experienced hypertriglyceridemia. This study evidenced that metabolic syndrome prevalence for this group was 35.33%. It is recommended to evaluate women in postmenopausal transition in order to detect risk factors, promote healthy life-styles to prevent lethal cardiovascular and metabolic effects of this syndrome.
