Impact of Climate Changes on Cultivation of Small Cardamom in Cardamom Hills Region (CHR) in India: An Opinion

2016
The climate change has affected the various aspects of the life across the world and agriculture is one of them. In India it has shown very similar effects on cultivation of crops as witnessed globally at next corners. Here we have studied the wide range effects of climatic changes on cultivation of small and large cardamom. Our study considers the likely changes that climate change will bring in temperature, precipitation and extreme rainfall, drought, flooding, storms, sea-level rise and environmental health risks and the overall impact on agriculture. It has been found that there has been noticeable increase in mean minimum and mean maximum temperature in CHR region; this has adversely affected the production of small cardamom through the years. The increased temperature also has witnessed the reduction in soil nutrient level at rapid rate and onset on insect/pest attack. Anticipated impacts on agriculture from climate change and its various aspects have been reviewed which may enables us to avoid the yield loss upto some extent.
