According to the American Institute of Criminology and Research, employee theft is responsible for over $50 billion worth of losses for both small and large businesses in the USA. The shrinkage breaks down into three categories: internal losses 60 per cent (this represents employee theft); external losses 20 per cent (these are the shoplifting costs); and errors at the cash register 20 per cent. First, deals with what kinds of activities constitute employee theft.
