Studying the process of land succession that occurs in open land by observing water losses in the soil is
very important to know how long it takes for plants to grow naturally. Water content in the soil is
understood as soil moisture. It was estimated using brightness index (BI) and a linear model of soil
moisture ( ) from RGB bands of aerial photo data taken in four different times during four days. This
study aims to understand changes in vegetation cover and distribution on the surface of the earth
through changes in water moisture that changes all the time. The BI and was applied to a small area
of bare land area around the University of Lampung. Besides that, the quality of vegetation growth also
evaluated using Green-Red Vegetation Index (GRVI). The results obtained indicate a moderate and
weak correlation between the changes in soil moisture from both and BI and GRVI respectively.
Although it failed to detect the vegetation cover change since during that times the change in soil
moisture did not follow by the succession process. Two vegetation named Imperata cylindrical and
Cyperatus rotundus become the most usable plant for detecting the drought's effect while another plant is
still in health condition.
