The population problem (Editorial)

1978
The decline in the birth rate in Sweden and suggestions for its reversal are discussed. For many years this subject was unpopular but it has recently been given much attention. The decrease is due mainly to the fact that fewer women are having more than 2 children. A greater effort should be made to determine what social and political policies will serve as incentives for couples to have children. Surveys have indicated that most parents would prefer to raise their children at home. Also an attempt must be made to resolve the economic inequalities between parents who are able to get day care for their children and those who are not. Parent insurance or an increase in family oriented day care centers are suggestions which could help parents who want to have children.
