Shear jamming onset in dense granular suspensions

2021
Discontinuous shear thickening and dynamic shear jamming can be observed in the dense granular suspension. Here, we determine the criterion for the occurrence of shear jamming by studying the first normal stress difference N 1 of dense granular suspension in steady-state rheology. When N 1 = 0, the suspension is shear jammed, and the frictional contact dominates the framework. The jamming onset stress decreases when the particle volume fraction increases. The lubrication to friction mechanism predicts the occurrence of shear jamming and is consistent with the trend predicted by the Wyart–Cates model. The state of a dense granular suspension can be distinguished in the state diagram via the analysis of N 1. This work can aid understanding of the rheology of concentrated particle suspensions.
