Travel time as transportation indicator of urban sprawl: final report

2011
The project is aimed to verify usage of factor of travel time to describe problem of urban sprawl and to find out the ways for decreasing environmental and health impacts of transportation through landscape planning. The area of the South Moravian region was analyzed by using the methods of map and ortophoto analysis in the search of sites where are significant traces ot the processes of commercial and residential suburbanization. The development of these sites was documented from the perspective of a functional division of a land-use. The information on this selected area was added to the transport model. This model was continuously adapted to the requirements modeling in a fast growing areas. The traditional concept of a 24-hour model was abandoned in favour of the specific model with 3-hour characteristic periods for morning and afternoon peak hours. The proposed methodology was prepared as the output of the project based on data and experience gained during work. This methodology describes how to use transport modelling for evaluation of various projects and landscape planning documents with the special focus on the possibility to cover fast changes in the suburb areas. This methodology has an appendix with the set of measures which helps to prevent the negative impacts of a traffic resulting from urban sprawl.
