Oppidum as an urban landscape. Multidisciplinary approach to the study of empty spaces ‘intra muros’

2021
‘Empty spaces’ within urban centres are deliberately not built up and are maintained as such for a prolonged period of time. The archaeological excavations of oppida - the fortified urbanized centres spanning the Late Iron Age to Early Roman transition - almost exclusively focus on the originally built-up areas. Projects studying the entire enclosed area as one urban space, and thus, also looking at the role and function of seemingly ‘empty’ areas, are rare.
