Betaine, an Efficient Feed Additive

2019
Heat stress exposes animals to a higher than the ideal temperature, resulting in various health issues, i.e. respiratory deficits decrease feed intake and thus reduced weight at marketing era. One of the most significant factors that has adverse impacts on animal production is heat stress. Heat stress also has adverse impacts on the characteristics of the carcass and therefore lower meat quality, consequently leads to severe shortage in the market. Using feed additives that have beneficial impacts to resist thermal stress are the most significant alternatives. Betaine that has several other positive impacts from the stress of gentle heat. Slight beneficial impacts were recorded in most of the studies; however, systematic findings were uncommon. Because there are nearly infinite opportunities for dosage and betaine products, more study is needed. Nevertheless, under more standardized circumstances further study is required to assess the correct dosage and mixture as well as the precise mechanism of action of betaine's anti-stress effects. Betaine has the ability as donors of the methyl-group to spare methionine and choline, and under stress circumstances is believed to enhance broiler output.
