Applications of Contact Modelling and Analysis in Geomechanics

1999
This paper reviews the current contact modelling technology available for finite element analysis. The contact surface modelling formulation and logic, relevant to geomechanical analysis, will be described. The soil-structure interaction analysis for a number of case studies is also highlighted. Successful applications for design include concrete tunnel linings in soil/rock, buried arch structures in granular material and excavation simulation in jointed rock. Other applications for contact modelling are suggested.
