The Exchange: A Peaceful Controversy

In the summer of 1970 this column sug gested that readers might find useful a letter in American Notes and Queries which ex plained the origin and meaning of the peace symbol (i.e., that it was designed by Gerald Holton for the first march from London to Aldermaston at Easter 1958 and represents a combination of the semaphore signals for "n" and "d," nuclear disarmament). Since then "The Exchange" has received additional and sometimes conflicting information concerning the origin and meaning of this symbol. Nina David, chief of the telephone refer ence division of the Brooklyn Public Library wrote to tell us that, because her library was "inundated" with queries concerning the ori gin of the peace symbol, they contacted SANE in October 1969.
