Melioidotic Septic Arthritis: A Case Report

2009
Melioidotic septic arthritis may follow infection by Burkholderia pseudomallei. This paper reports a case of septic arthritis and bacteremia caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei. According to previous literatures, patients with melioidotic arthritis are likely to have DM, and the knee joints are most likely to be affected. Melioidotic patients can be treated successfully with antibiotic treatment. Some studies suggested open drainage, such as arthrotomy, when medical treatment fails. This paper describes the case in which patient's knee was persistently swelling after antibiotic treatment, and improved after arthroscopic debridement.
