Optimizing the design of workplace skill learning

2005
Most would agree that workplace learning activities should be designed to enhance employee learning of content that is viewed as important to workplace success. Discussions of workplace learning often focus on the advantages and disadvantages of various formats for managing the delivery of instruction. For example, what are the advantages and disadvantages of structured on-the-job training, on-line Web-based instruction, computer-assisted instruction, or traditional classroom instruction. Although such management formats for implementing workplace learning are important and provide logistical frameworks for presenting the learning activities, the success of workplace learning is highly dependent on the design of the lessons and learning activities that are delivered within those formats. This presentation focuses on the Performance Based Instructional Design (PBID) model for developing effective instructional lessons and activities regardless of the actual delivery format used.
