SYNBIOTIC EFFECTS OF GAIACTO-OLIGOSACCFIARIDE, POLYDEXTROSE AND BIFIDOBACTERIUM I-ACTIS Bi.O7 IN VITRO

2010
Synbiotics are usedto manipulate the endogenous microbioto, but ubether they are more ffictiue than tbe constirutingqtro- ondprebiotics ahine rernains to be detertnined, The objectiue ofthis uorþ uas to eualuate galacto-olþsaaeharide (GOS), poþd"extrose (PDX) and Bifidobocteriam lactis Bi-07 alone and in combinations in a sinnukted baman colon model. Their fficts on tlte microbial cornrnuni4t structure and octiuity utere anaþsed utith flow cytomeny, qPCR and chrornatogrophic metltods. Probiotic B. lnctis was bif.dogenic, but haa onþ ruinor effects on tlte metobolites produced in tlte colon model. Prebiotic GOS increased the bifdobacteria, utltereas PDX had negatiue fficts on the B. I?ctis ond Clostidium nurnbers. The prebiotics dffired in their fficts on the metabolite production. Synbiotic GOS+B loctis increased the leuels of Bifidobacterioru and decreased tbe numbers of Lactobocillus, Bacteroides ond cltistridio ond thtts, had. more fficts on the minobinl communi4t structure thon the constituting components alone. Also the combination of PDX+GOS+B.lactis had sinilor beneficial fficx on the miqobiota ond in aadition, the two oligosaccharilzs benefited tbe production of sbort-chainfatty ocids on tlte whole lengtb ofthe colonic rnod?L In tbis study, tlte synbiotics intl"?i"S GOS utere more ffictiue tbon the constitutingpro- or prebiotics alone in rnodalating the microbiota cornposition.
