Hydrogenation/isomerization process improves alkylation-unit performance
1983
This article describes the HPN-IVB Hydroisomerization Process, which improves alkylation unit performance by selectively hydrogenating butadiene while simultaneously isomerizing butene-1 to butene-2. Shows how integration of the HPN-IVB process with a 4,000 b/sd sulfuric acid alkylation unit at a Houston refinery improved alkylation unit performance by reducing acid consumption while increasing throughput, alkylate octane, and hydrocarbon yield. Applies process economics to a typical application. Presents diagrams of an isomerization reaction path and a process flow scheme. Concludes that the described commercial experience demonstrates the ability of the HPN-IVB process to upgrade a refiner's alkylation facility with a low initial investment and an excellent return on investment.
