Effects of solifenacin and tamsulosin for the treatment of double-J stent related symptoms

2014
Objectives To evaluate the efficacy of solifenacin and tamsulosin in improving double-J stent related urinary tract symptoms. Methods A total of 79 patients with double-J stent placement following ureteroscopic lithotripsy were randomized into two groups. The treated group received 5 mg solifenacin and 0.2 mg tamsulosin once daily for 4 weeks, and the control group received routine treatment. All patients were asked to complete the Intemational Prostate Symptom Score(IPSS),quanlity of life (QOL) and visual analogue scale (VAS) 4 weeks post -operatively when the double-J stent was removed. Results All patients finished the studies. The total IPSS score, irritative IPSS score, obstructive IPSS score,Qol and VAS score were all significantly different between the two groups(P <0.05).Total IPSS score:(13.56 ±5.10) vs(7.26 ±3.20) ; irritative IPSS score:(7.23 ±3.50)vs (4.15 ± 2.16) ; obstructive IPSS score:(6.33 ± 2.55) vs (3.11 ± 2.07) ; QOL:(2.75 ± 1.26) vs (1.40 ± 1.23) ; VAS score:(2.88 ± 1.64) vs (2.03 ± 1.35).Conclusions Administration of solifenacin and tamsulosin for patients with an interal double-J stent can relieve stent-related symptoms and improve quality of life.
