On Friction and Wear Behavior of Fe-based Bulk Amorphous Alloy

2006
A Fe-based bulk amorphous alloy was prepared using arc melting and copper mold suction casting.Ball-on-disc friction and wear test was carried out in dry sliding condition.Friction and wear behavior of cast Fe-based bulk amorphous alloy and the influence of heat treatments on its wear resistance were investigated.Worn surface morphologies of the samples were observed on a scanning electron microscope, and the wear mechanism of Fe-based bulk amorphous alloy and the crystal alloys with same element as the previous amorphous alloy was analyzed. No significant influence of the alloys' structure and mechanical performance on friction coefficient of the system was observed.A typical fatigue wear characteristic can be found for the cast and different heat treatment states of the Fe-based bulk amorphous alloy, whose wear resistance is higher than that of the crystal alloys with same element.Heat treatment can effectively enhance the wear resistance of cast Fe-based bulk amorphous alloy.
