Leo Szilard was one of the most imaginative and versatile scientists of the twentieth century. He scientifically described to release of nuclear energy, the nuclear chain reaction; he recognized the potential of the extracted energy in the use of the atomic bomb and achieved all this in the shadow of Hitler’s threat. At the same time, he remained a staunch opponent of using an already finished nuclear bomb against innocent civilians and vehemently opposed the nuclear arms race becoming the guardian of peace during the very difficult Cold War years.
