Revival of the Species Lactobacillus lindneri and the Design of a Species Specific Oligonucleotide Probe

1996
Summary Chemotaxonomic studies were performed on strains of lactobacilli of uncertain taxonomic position isolated from spoiled beer. Five strains were found to be distinct from other Lactobacillus species. Their morphology and physiology agree with that of a Lactobacillus species which was previously designated “Lactobacillus lindneri” . The separate species status of these strains was confirmed by comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. We propose L. lindneri as a valid species of the genus Lactobacillus . Strain DSM 20690 is proposed as the type strain. An rRNA targeted oligonucleotide probe allows a reliable identification of L. lindneri .
