A series of 5-aryl-4-acyl-3-hydroxy-l-(2-hydroxyethyl)-3-pyrrolin-2-ones have been synthesized using the reaction of methyl esters of acylpyruvic acids with a mixture of aromatic aldehyde and ethanolamine. The proposed structures are confirmed by 1 H NMR spectroscopy. Antibacterial activity of the synthesized compounds has been studied.
