The ATM Hacking Case

Chapter Three unpacks an unique case of ATM hacking that occurred to the First Commercial Bank (FCB) in Taiwan. To facilitate readers’ assessment of the uniqueness and generalizability of the case, Taiwan’s social-historical context is introduced, followed by briefing its two major law enforcement agencies. The FCB case is thoroughly discussed, including the group actions by cyber criminals—Carbanak/Cobalt—and law enforcement agencies’ responses. Multiple sources of empirical data and documents are used to portray the incident in a chronological order.
