2021
EnglishMiguel Gayarre Espinal remains largely unknown to modern psychiatrists and only those holding a special interest in the history of our specialty tend to be familiar with his name. This is not surprising as there are only few works about this author with his personal biography scarcely referred to. Through this work, we will try to “revive” the figure of this psychiatrist who was born in Pamplona in the second half of the 19th century. Among the great names attributed to the so-called Madrid School of Psychiatry, Miguel Gayare Espinal is probably the least known. Santiago Ramon y Cajal, Luis Simarro and Nicolas Achucarro were among his teachers. Gayare later became director of the Ciempozuelos psychiatric hospital. He was also the maternal grandfather of the famous journalist and Olympic athlete, Miguel de la Quadra-Salcedo y Gayarre.
