Selected Papers on Epidemiology of Atherosclerosis

1970
The present study was carried out on 95% of the 1,500 members of a single clan of Enga-speaking people living at Tukisenta in the Western Highlands of New Guinea fifteen miles from Laiagam. These people live in scattered hamlets at an altitude of 8,000 feet. Wild life is scarce so hunting makes slight demands on their energy and contributes little to their nutrition. As land is plentiful and tribal fighting is a thing of the past, their major activities are restricted to preparation of sweet potato gardens, harvesting of the crop, collection of firewood for their homes and occasional house building. We have selected this primitive population for study because the recent introduction of pyrethrum as a cash crop and discoveries of minerals in the area should assure a rapid urbanization.
