Requirement, Architecture, and Performance for DSRC in Vehicular Sensor Network

2011
Vehicular Sensor Network (VSN) is being seriously considered as a key enabling technology as it allows vehicles to communicate with each other (v2v) and/or with roadside infrastructure (v2r). Effectively use of wireless communication can enhance various types of traffic applications. Dedicated Short-Range Communication (DSRC) standard is an ideal candidate for supporting wireless access in VSN environment characterized by multichip connectivity, high vehicle mobility, and heterogeneous services with a variety of QoS requirements. It can achieve higher data rates, wider communication range and coexist with Internet and other mobile communication network. In this paper, we present an overview of the multiple associated standards suite of DSRC, especially detail the core part of DSRC---IEEE 802.11p and multichannel operation, also including the amendments and enhancements. Additionally, the performance analysis mechanisms for the reliability and scalability of DSRC system have been introduced by defining available metrics.
