Tissue engineering approaches for meniscal injuries

The menisci are avascular structures within the knee joint that are frequently damaged and torn. Such troublesome injuries can be treated with debridement of small tears and repair or excision of larger tears. Injury to the menisci can lead to the accelerated development of osteoarthritis within the joint. Tissue engineering techniques have shown promising potential in forming meniscal matrix components which may be a useful adjuct in repairing such injuries. © 2013 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
