EnglishTo analyze the cytological changes occurring in the intestinal mucosa in the presence of Blastocystis, in vitro studies were performed using segments of the small intestine of NMRI mice incubated with a strain of Blastocystis sp. BUEVG68-2008, which was recovered by axenic culture from the stool of a child with intestinal symptoms. During the first 24 h of incubation, the initial interaction and internalization of vacuolated forms of Blastocystis sp. were observed, and between the next 48 and 72 h, alteration of the brush border and destruction of enterocytes were detected, causing the subsequent release of abundant cellular debris and presence of macrophages. The observed cytological findings demonstrate the capacity of Blastocystis to alter the intestinal epithelium.
