Metabolism of Selenium in a Model of Mesenteric Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury

1996
Selenium is the essential co-factor of glutathione peroxidase involved in free radicals detoxification. In case of ischemia-reperfusion and depending on the model studied, the tissue variations of selenium and reduced glutathione can be related to various mecanisms (1); among others, a redistribution has been suggested. The aim of this study was to confirm this phenomena and to study the effect of N-acetylcysteine (NAC), a free radical scavenger (2), in a model of moderate intestinal ischemia-reperfusion injury by using hemodynamic, biochemical and histological data.
