IoT Enabled Low-Cost Indoor Air Quality Monitoring System with Botanical Solutions

2020
Air pollution is becoming prevalent at all places. It is considered hazardous and can cause serious illnesses. With changing lifestyle, time spent indoors has increased. Thus, it becomes essential to monitor indoor air pollution for living a healthy life. IoT is considered an excellent choice for this purpose. It can be used as an intelligent network of devices which can monitor and share data remotely and also has capability of decision making. The present paper proposes Smart Indoor Air Quality Monitoring System for measuring carbon dioxide and particulate matter from household and workplace activities. Low-cost sensors such as MQ-135 and a dust sensor (Sharp GP2Y1014AUAF) have been used for measuring aforementioned pollutants. A cloud base IoT platform is used for building the prototype of the proposed IAQ monitoring system. The work has been shown in the form of user-friendly and information-rich android application for data visualization and notifying the users. The results show that proposed system successfully measures these indoor air pollutants and provides botanical solutions (plants) for improving air quality.
