Experimental verification of newly proposed design of metal O-ring seal

2021
Abstract Metal O-ring seals are used in various service conditions involving high pressure and ultra-high vacuum. The long-term performance of the metal O-ring seals depends on their elastic resilience. It is necessary to maximize elastic resilience to extend its long-term performance. In this paper, experimental tests have been carried out to verify a new design of the metal O-ring seal, which was designed to increase the elastic resilience, and showed that the new design can significantly improve the elastic resilience compared to the standard one. The following procedures were taken into account: (a) prepare the standard and new design shaped specimens by wire electrical discharge machining (b) obtain the characteristics curves for two specimens (c) verify the test results by comparing a commercial product and FE analysis (d) calculate the stored elastic energy and compare.
