Voltammetric Determination of Formaldehyde at Low Concentrations in the Synthetic Fuel Oxymethylene Dimethyl Ether

2019
In this study, the formaldehyde content in the synthetic fuel oxymethylene dimethyl ether (OME) was measured with three different methods. The formaldehyde concentration was below 1000 mg/L. Only the voltammetric method showed no cross-sensitivity with degradation products of OME, possible fuel additives, and OME itself. The sodium sulfite titration method showed strong cross-sensitivities to formic acid and amine 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol. This amine also influenced the measurement result of the 4-amino-3-hydrazino-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole method. In OME without degradation products and additives, the three investigated methods showed similar results.
