The present invention discloses a process for the hydrodenitrogenation of heavy oil, the method comprising: at hydrotreating conditions, in the presence of hydrogen, the oil-containing heavy oil feedstock sequentially with hydrodemetallization catalyst, a hydrodesulfurization catalyst, plus hydrogen saturation catalyst and hydrodenitrogenation catalyst, to obtain hydrogenated oil; wherein, prior to contact with the hydrogenation and saturation catalyst, resulting after contact with a hydrodesulfurization catalyst in a hydrodesulfurization catalyst after contact with the product into gas mentioned, the liquid phase to obtain a gas phase containing hydrogen and sulfur-containing compounds, and of compounds for contacting with the sulfur-containing hydrodenitrogenation catalyst. This method can be improved while significantly improving the denitrification rate of the heavy oil hydrogenation of heavy oil, increase the yield of liquid products is a heavy oil hydrogenation process, thereby saving the production cost.
