Building resilience to earthquakes and landslides in Aizawl, India

2014
Aizawl, India, faces a high-level risk from earthquakes and landslides. Rapid, poorly controlled growth has created a dense urban environment of seismically vulnerable concrete buildings. To address the complex and interconnected risk created by Aizawl's built environment, unstable geology, nascent regulatory setting, and geographic isolation, GeoHazards International (GHI) assembled a multidisciplinary team from India and the United States to work with local colleagues in Aizawl agencies to help develop a better understanding of Aizawl's earthquake and landslide risk and to implement specific, detailed measures to make the city safer.
