Simulation of Mach 3 wind tunnel flow with a step by a two-phase flow model

2018
Many simulations for Mach 3 wind tunnel flow are done using Euler equations of gas dynamics. Here, an alternative two-dimensional, compressible and non-equilibrium barotropic mixture model is employed for this benchmark. A jet is injected at the left border with compressible gas and incompressible liquid phase with pressure equilibrium. Numerical results are carried out by Godunov methods and validated with results provided by Euler equations of single-phase flow. Results are analysed with the dependency on lattice size, the Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy (CFL) condition as well as different gas mass fractions for the gas phase. Simulations demonstrate the capability of the model to reproduce shock wave propagation in gas-liquid two-phase mixture and are found to be in good agreement with single-phase flow simulations.
