Effect of different surface conditioning on shear bond strength of different types of luting cements to ceramics

2007
Objective: To compare shear bond strength of different luting cements to several porcelain after different porcelain surface treatments. Methods: Three kinds of ceramic specimens (Empress II, GI-II and Cercon) were investigated and each kind of specimen was divided into four groups respectively. The four groups were treated with sand-blasting plus silanation, etching plus silanation , respectively. Then two kinds of luting cements were used to bond the ceramic pieces and the shear bond strengths were measured. Results: The results showed that in Empress group the shear bond strength of specimen treated with etching+silanized and Vita bonding was higher than other specimens and in GI-II and zircon group the shear bond strength of specimen treated with sand-blasting and cement was higher than other specimens. Conclusions: It is suggested that surface conditioning using etching plus silanation and Vita bonding can remarkably improve the shear bond strength of Empress II ceramic.
