Bus Headway Variations: Improving Bus Reliability and Passenger Travel Time in Dynamic Systems

2007
This paper describes how bus-route management is a dynamic process of interacting buses and waiting passengers. The paper proposes new bus control strategies to reduce the negative effects of headway variations. These strategies will modify the speed of buses and will consider the extension of green phase at intersections. Each strategy performance will be evaluated in terms of passenger total travel time and headway variation. The results show that combining variable speed pattern and the extension of effective green phase is efficient when the scheduled headway is less than 8 minutes and the time alteration is about 2-4 minutes.
