A clinical and histopathological study of efficacy of chlorhexidine on gingival healing

2012
Background Periodontal dressing are advocated post operatively to afford wound healing and prevent patient discomfort. And these materials are not readily modified by addition of antibiotics or antiseptics to provide antibacterial properties. Material and Methods Subjects for this study consisted of 21 patients of both sexes in the age group of 20 to 40 years, requiring periodontal therapy. Results The present study showed that there was marked reduction in plaque index, gingival index, gingival exudates measurement and the degree of inflammatory cells on Chlorhexidine treated side compared to the control side. Summary and Conclusion Further longitudinal experimental studies are necessary to delve into the usefulness of Chlorhexidine gluconate as a post-operative surgical dressing.
