REDUKTIONEN UND OXYDATIONEN BET BIOLOGISCHEN STRAHLENWIRKUNGEN

1963
Studies are compiled on the biological effects of radiation. An attempt is made to bring the studies under the simple viewpoint of oxidation and reduction. The first of the three main sections deals with the accelerating effect of ultraviolet rays on the process of reduction within the skin which occurs at the sulfhydryl groups of the germinal layer after exposure to light. The reduction investigated concerns endand exogenous substances which are brought into contact with the sulfhydryl of the germinal layer by means of transfusion in the living pig's ear, in part, and also by immediate rinsing of the skin stripped from the ear. The third main section gives a description of the photochemical production of sulfhydryl groups and other reducing groups originating from ultraviolet radiation of proteins, amino acids and sugars. Other radiation effects are also mentioned, particularly the coagulation of protein, inhibition of growth and hemolysis. The second main section contains theoretical discussions- relating more recent literature on radiation to older studies. The discussion is also extended to more general physiological and pharmacological problems related to medical radiology. The introduction and conclusion refer to the position of pharmacology within the field of medical radiology. (auth)
