MONITORING BASED MAINTENANCE (MBM) ENGINEERING FOR LIFE CYCLE COST MANAGEMENT

Monitoring Based Maintenance (MBM) is a civil infrastructure maintenance philosophy based on input provided from monitoring data. For human health, most of medical doctors are conducting Evidence Based Medicine (EBM). And they can effectively keep and recover human health with mutual informed consent based on medical evidence. For civil infrastructures, it is considered that civil engineers should have an understanding that MBM Engineering is effective and useful to maintain those constructed structures' performance and function, to extend structural life and consequently to minimize the Life Cycle Cost. Furthermore, it is confirmed that high performance sensors support MBM Engineering effectively. Real time monitoring network system is also recommended.
