28. La Shoah dans la culture mémorielle allemande
2018
Between the end of the 1940s and 1970s, the murder of European Jews played no role in the memorial culture. Only intensive local historical research at the end of the 1970s moved politicians and the public to willingly analyse the history of persecution by the Nazis as a whole. In this context, the historical persecution of the Jews during the Nazi era and the multiple contacts with survivors and family members in connection with a visiting programme have led to a change in perception. The murder of European Jews and the responsibility of the German people for this crime are firmly anchored as a part of history today. This has impacted official policy, especially foreign policy and relations with the State of Israel. In the school curriculum, the Jewish victims are at the centre of learning about the Nazi crimes. This view of history was integrated as a master narrative into the new federal states after unification of both German states.
