Simulating the Unstructured Mesh Deformation of Moving SARS-CoV-2 Virus Bodies
2020
Simulation of fluid-structure interactions involving moving 3D bodies requires computation of large mesh deformations. The Radial Basis Function (RBF) technique is an interpolation method that produces high-quality unstructured adaptive meshes. We model the 3D mesh deformation and simulate the effect of hydrodynamics on a population of the novel coronaviruses (i.e., SARS-CoV-2) with realistic geometries. These videos show the 3D unstructured mesh deformation around moving SARS-CoV-2 virus bodies over successive time steps. Computing the 3D mesh deformation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and its S protein may be an initial step toward understanding how the viruses propagate inside and outside the body.
