ON THE RELATION BETWEEN THE MOVING STRIATION AND THE PLASMA PARAMETERS IN A GLOW DISCHARGE

1961
An investigation was made on the dependence of the frequency, the propagation velocity, and the plasma parameters upon the discharge condition. The plasma parameters were measured by means of a movable probe. The principal results obtained are as follows: (1) The frequency is influenced neither by a change of electrode material nor by clectrode separation. (2) The chang of mode occurs with an increase of the ambient tempera re of the discharge tubc. (3) The relation between the fequency and the average velocity of the moving striation is almost linear. (4) The relative light intensity is large on the anode side of a range of strong electric field, while, on the contrary, on the cathode side of a strong field range the local velocity is large. (5) The plasma parameters change abruptly with the change of the mode. (auth)
