Stability of midazolam in sodium chloride infusion packs

1993
Objective: To determine the stability of midazolam in an intravenous infusion solution. Study Procedure: The physicochemical stability of midazolam (1 mg/mL) in sodium chloride 0.9% for injection in 100 mL polyvinyl chloride infusion bags was studied. Solutions were stored for 49 days at 4 degree C, 2.0 degree C protected from light and 20 degree C with fluorescent lighting for 12 hours each 24 hours, and the concentration of midazolam was periodically determined using a high performance liquid chromatography assay. Results: The midazolam solutions were relatively stable, with all solutions maintaining over 90% of their initial concentration for the duration of the study. Differences in the loss of midazolam between the storage conditions were not statistically significant. Conclusions: The clinical implication of these results is that, on the basis of physicochemical stability, infusion bags of midazolam in sodium chloride 0.9% can be safely prepared and stored at or below 20 degree C for periods of approximately one month.
