Cum mente et malleo: a ciência na escrita de Claude-Henri Gorceix (1874-1891)

2010
Our proposal is to reconstitute in this dissertation the Claude-Henri Gorceix conception and scientific practice starting from the interpretation of the historical-philosophical foundations of his epitome cum mente et malleo, unfolded in his writing. With this objective, we appealed, mainly, to the Gorceix correspondence maintained with the Brazilian emperor among 1874, period that he settled down in Brazil, with the intention of founding the School of Mines in Ouro Preto, becoming his professor and first director, up to 1891, when he returned to France. His wide program of science articulated different knowledge, providing an interrelation besides among the types of know related to the nature (in an articulation of the 19th century empiric method and notions originating from of a philosophy of nature delineated in the 18th century) and to the knowledge of the humanities’ field.
