Transgenic Sugarcane (Saccharum spp.)

2000
Cultivated sugarcane (interspecific hybrids of Saccharum spp.) is one of the world’s main sources of sugar. It is a vital component in the economies of many tropical countries and the prime candidate as a future fuel crop because of its efficient biomass production (FAO 1991). The production of alcohol, paper, woods, animal food, and industrial enzymes are other main goals of the sugarcane agroindustry.
