Textile reclamation in Britain: Some recent impacts on a traditional industry☆

1978
Abstract Textile reclamation in Britain has a long history. The technology and processes of the industry have not changed radically over the years. With the advent and widespread use of synthetic and man-made fibres, however, textile reclamation has become more complex. Colour and fibre type are crucial factors often meaning that mixed by-products from manufacturing are not readily reclaimed. Several separation techniques are discussed. Materials that are inherently mixed during manufacture again pose problems for reclamation. Notable here is the tufted carpet industry. Escalating raw material, energy and waste disposal costs make the reduction in wastes from manufacturing a priority. Research into the utilization of unavoidable wastes is also important.
