Syringaldehyde isolated from Abutilon indicum Linn. leaves exhibits broad spectrum anti-microbial activity

2021
Abstract Abutilon indicum Linn. (AI) is used in ayurvedic system and has shown potential to treat microbial infections. In the present study syringaldehyde was reported for the first time from the leaves of AI ethyl acetate extract and quantified by HPTLC analysis. Further, syringaldehyde showed significant broad spectrum anti-bacterial activity against Bacillus subtilis (BS) and Klebsiella pneumonia (KP). CLSM analysis also indicated at the ability of the molecule to inhibit biofilm formation in fungus Aspergillus fumigatus indicating its potent anti-fungal activity. Overall the molecule has potential to be used as anti-microbial compound with wide application.
