Chronic Haemodialysis and ERG

1980
Eighteen kidney patients showing a comparatively good compensation and satisfactorily clinical ophthalmological results were examined. The results showed: (1) Photopic ERG was normal in all cases. (2) In comparison with a control group scotopic ERG showed a statistically significant reduction in amplitudes of a- and b-waves in about two thirds of the cases. Two eyes showed superelevated potential reactions. (3) No peak time differences as to the normal values were found. (4) Dynamic ERG showed distinct reductions in amplitudes in nearly all of the cases. (5) There was no correlation between biochemical data, length of dialysis history and ERG. (6) The authors consider the failure of the scotopic system as an expression of uraemic retinopathy.
