Suicide Survivor Programs in IASP Member Countries

2002
A number of countries are not represented, so a lot of information is missing. Yet it is possible to draw some conclusions from the data received. Survivor help is a growing field. At the IASP Congress in Montreal four years ago there were only a few people who expressed interest in the field. There seems little doubt that it will eventually be as big and as formalized as the field of suicide prevention has become. Like that field, the process of growth will not only provide help to the individual through an intensely painful experience of loss and transition, but will aim to reduce prejudice, facilitate research, develop standards through investigations of effectiveness and initiate studies on overcoming cultural hurdles and restrictions.
