Influence of neodymium on microstructure and corrosion behavior of Mg‐8Li‐3Al‐2Zn alloy

2017
The influence of Nd addition on microstructure and corrosion behavior of LAZ832 alloy was investigated by immersion test, electrochemical experiments, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results indicate that Nd addition leads to the coarsening of grains and the improvement of corrosion resistance. Meanwhile, results of XPS demonstrate that the corrosion film of LAZ832 consists of Mg(OH)2, while the corrosion film of the LAZ832-0.5Nd alloy is composed of Mg(OH)2 and Nd2O3. The improvement of corrosion resistance is attributed to the purifying effects of Nd addition and the appearance of Nd2O3, which changes the structure of the corrosion film and inhibits the penetration of the detrimental anions. Finally, Nd addition improves the corrosion resistance of the alloy, but it doesn't change the corrosion mechanism of the alloy.
